Elizabeth DeVille doesn't belong at a party like this--one where the gowns cost more than her Camry and cigars run higher than her grad school utility bills. Dragged out of seclusion by her best friend Suri, Elizabeth is merely playing dress-up, rubbing elbows with a crowd that banished her troubled family years ago.

Hunter West is tired. Tired of parties, tired of pretending, and tired of trying to right a wrong that haunts him every day. Bourbon heir and professional poker player by day, by night Hunter is gambling with his life in a high-stakes game of crime and blackmail.

When Elizabeth stumbles into Hunter's den of vices, she's a light in the darkness, a flame in the void. And, just like everything he touches, Hunter mars her in a record time. To rectify the damage done, Elizabeth needs money she doesn't have, and she's come up with a foolproof way to get it.

Follow Elizabeth--code-named Scarlett--to the lush Nevada brothel where she'll auction her virginity and risk the only thing that's not for sale: her heart. The highest bidder is a familiar face, with wicked hands and the devil's mouth. And a secret so dark that it could cost her life.

Survival Colony Nine by Joshua David Bellin

Synopsis:
In a future world of dust and ruin, fourteen-year-old Querry Genn struggles to recover the lost memory that might save the human race.

Querry is a member of Survival Colony Nine, one of the small, roving groups of people who outlived the wars and environmental catastrophes that destroyed the old world. The commander of Survival Colony Nine is his father, Laman Genn, who runs the camp with an iron will. He has to--because heat, dust, and starvation aren't the only threats in this ruined world.

There are also the Skaldi.

Monsters with the ability to infect and mimic human hosts, the Skaldi appeared on the planet shortly after the wars of destruction. No one knows where they came from or what they are. But if they're not stopped, it might mean the end of humanity.

Six months ago, Querry had an encounter with the Skaldi--and now he can't remember anything that happened before then. If he can recall his past, he might be able to find the key to defeat the Skaldi.

If he can't, he's their next victim.

My Thoughts:
It had been a very long time since I had picked up a sci-fi novel, specifically a YA dystopian, post apocalyptic one. A few years ago, it was my favorite genre. Now my tastes are more adult romance than anything. Survival Colony Nine reminded me of everything I had missed about YA dystopians. I loved it. It encouraged me to pick up more of them in the future.

Survival Colony Nine was an interesting take on the post apocalyptic genre. Due to how the plot was set up, none of the characters could be trusted. I was suspicious of all of them. At times, the author even had me doubting the main character, Querry. It was a fantastic way to read. I don't think I've gotten that emotionally involved in trying to figure out what's going to happen in a book in a long time. There were quite a few plot twists and turns in the book. I was only able to predict two of them. Most of them shocked me, which is hard to do.

Only one thing bothered me about this book. The characters made quite a few pop culture references to things that they couldn't have known about. I noticed it throughout the book when I was reading it, and it drove me bonkers. For example, one of the characters references boy scouts a few times. Even the main character admits that he has no idea what it means, but he can only remember six months in the past. The old lady is the only one that remembers the before times. However, being older, her memory would start to fade. I doubt she would remember something as trivial as boy scouts. There were a few other things like that. It bothered quite a bit.

All in all, I really enjoyed Survival Colony Nine. I'm hoping that the author writes a sequel. Where the book left off, it could be wrapped up, or have a sequel. I want to know if the colony does survive, or if they end up perishing. I also have quite a few unanswered questions that I won't go into here because they contain spoilers. If you've read the book and want to know my questions, feel free to send me a message and ask. I recommend this book to anyone looking for an action packed dystopian.

I give Survival Colony Nine: 4/5.

Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Crystal Blue Bottle by Luke Benjamen Kuhns

Synopsis:
A young woman named Deseray Underwood was been found dead, in her London lodgings, by her fiance Samuel Mortimer. The body itself showed no signs of a struggle. Lestrade, baffled by the cause of death, summons the aid of Sherlock Holmes and his great powers of deduction. Holmes stumbles upon one single clue, a crystal blue bottle, which sends him and Watson on a wild chase through the streets of London in pursuit of answers to this young woman's sudden demise. A death that would make any benefactor very wealthy.

My Thoughts:
For those of you that follow me on Facebook or Goodreads, you know that I love graphic novels. I'm a little obsessed with them. About twenty-five percent of my Goodreads challenge for 2014 are graphic novels. I also love Sherlock on the BBC. When I had an opportunity to review a graphic novel about Sherlock Holmes, I jumped at the chance. I'm so glad I did. I enjoyed it immensely.

Sherlock Holmes and the Crystal Blue Bottle was a great interpretation of Sherlock Holmes. I must admit, I have never read any of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's series (I know, I need to get on that), but I have always wanted to. The illustrations in this made the story come to life. It was almost as if the reader was there, solving the mystery with Holmes and Watson. The only thing I didn't like was that the abrupt change in the drawing style kind of threw me off. It changed in the middle of the story, and took a little bit for me to get back into it again.

When reading a graphic novel, I don't usually think about how much work it takes to make it. I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that most people don't. However, Sherlock Holmes and the Crystal Blue Bottle taught me that a lot of people and hard work go into making a graphic novel. I was astounded at the number of people that worked on it. I am grateful that all of them took the time to make something that I enjoyed so much. I recommend this for fans of the BBC show, or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's books. I also recommend this for anyone that is just looking for a great graphic novel to read.

I give Sherlock Holmes and the Crystal Blue Bottle: 4/5.

Follow by J.A. Huss

Synopsis:
#Women.

I fuck them. I use them. I pay them off. I find another. My demands are never denied. My contracts are always signed. They submit to me. Willingly. Completely. Temporarily. This is how it's always been.

Until I saw that filthy tweet.

@VaughnAsher My bare pussy. Your tongue.#ThingsIThinkAboutToGetOff

"FilthyBlueBird" thinks she can tease me with hashtags and then hide behind a Twitter handle? She thinks I wouldn't be more than happy to #RockHerFilthyWorld? She's wrong.

Her online fantasy is about to collide with her public reality, and it's about to happen... now.

My Thoughts:
I've read one another book by J.A. Huss, Come. I loved it. I think I gave it five stars. Therefore, I went into Follow with very high expectations. Unfortunately, it did not meet my expectations. In fact, it completely fell flat for me. I didn't like it at all.

The main characters drove me abso-freaking-lutely crazy. I couldn't stand either one of them. Vaughn Asher was such a jerk. He was very arrogant and egotistical, which annoys the hell out of me. For someone that supposedly has a lot of experience, he sucks as a dom. He's awkward when he is doing it, and he screws up multiple times. Even more annoying than Vaughn, was Grace's attitude. She put up with crap from him that no normal woman would have ever put up with, movie star or not. She also changed moods and decisions so quickly, I thought I was going to get whiplash. About twenty-five percent of the book was her deciding what to do. She was so wishy-washy. Just pick a freaking choice and stick with it already! Good Lord! It was so aggravating.

The other thing that really agitated me about Follow is that it is supposed to be a comedy. Maybe it's because the characters already ruined it for me, but I didn't find it funny at all. I don't think I even chuckled once while reading the book. The only thing I did like were the awesome hashtags at the beginning of each chapter. Some of them were incredibly creative.

Sadly, Follow just didn't do it for me. It's probably one of my least favorite books that I've read this year. However, I see a lot of people on Facebook that just love it. Everyone has different tastes.

I give Follow: 1/5.

Top Ten Tuesday: You Can't Just Read One

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. It was created because they are fond of lists.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lately, I have sucked at keeping up with memes. Now that I'm getting back into blogging on a regular basis, I figured what would be better to start with than a top ten Tuesday. This week's top ten Tuesday is authors that I have only read one book from, but need/want to read more. These are in no particular order. The covers that I am posting are the book I have read by that author.
1. Melody Anne
I read my first Melody Anne book earlier this week, and it was wonderful. I really liked how she put a different twist on the billionaire genre. She has a huge backlist, so it's going to take me quite a while to catch up.
2. Jessica Park
I read Left Drowning earlier in the month. I've had it ever since it released, and I am kicking myself for not reading it sooner. It was so good. I had heard all of the hype, but I didn't believe it. Now, I wish I would have listened to everyone.
3. Sloan Johnson
I had never heard of Sloan Johnson before. I read her book Truth or Dare for a challenge in a Facebook group that I am in because it was free on Kindle Unlimited. I am so glad that I did. The book was able to evoke so many emotions in me, even though it was so short.
4. Sarah Ann Walker
I am saddened that Sarah Ann Walker is not a more well known author. I read her book My Dear Stranger. For the first part, it was okay. Then the twist came, and BAM! I was hooked. Holy crap, she can write a great suspenseful book. I was blindsided by what happened. Probably one of the most elaborate, well thought out plots I've seen in years.
5. Z.B. Heller
Alright, this one might be cheating because her second book isn't out yet. However, I loved The Chronicles of Moxie so much that the second that the sequel goes live, I'm going to read it. No interruptions through out the day. Hell, I might even put a do not disturb sign up so my neighbours leave me alone. I'm sure if it's even close to as funny a the first, I will love it.
6. Anthea Sharp
On a whim, I picked up Feyland: The First Adventure when it was free. I didn't even read what it was about. The cover had me hooked. After reading it, all I can say is holy crap. As a gamer, being transported into a fantasy video game would be one of my greatest fantasies. I can't wait to continue the series.
7. Merrie Haskell
Last year, I read Handbook for Dragon Slayers. I loved the middle grade fantasy world that Merrie Haskell created. It was so in depth. Adults can enjoy it as well. I think she has another middle grade fantasy book coming out soon, if it hasn't been released already. I can't wait to dive into it.
8. Erika Robuck
Back in 2012, I read Hemingway's Girl by Erika Robuck. Erika made me fall head over heels in love with Ernest Hemingway. She wrote him in such a charming, swoon worthy way. I have other books by her. I just haven't had a chance to read them yet, but I hope to start them soon. If she writes all of her historical fiction novels as well as Hemingway's Girl, they will definitely be a treat.
9. Anne Elisabeth Stengl
I read Heartless several years ago, when I first got into blogging. I never liked reading Christian fiction until I read Heartless. It just blew my mind that I could find so much joy in reading a Christian fantasy book. Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to pick up the rest of the series, but I look forward to doing so.
10. Brian Knight
I recently read The Conjuring Glass. It filled that void in my life that has been there ever since Harry Potter ended. It similar to Harry Potter, with three female main characters instead of two boys and a female. I am dying to get the next book in the series and continue it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Whew, that was a heck of a lot harder than I thought it would be. So, do you agree with my top ten list? If you have a top ten list of your own, please link it in the comments so I can check it out. I would love to hear your thoughts.

The Conjuring Glass by Brian Knight

Synopsis:
When thirteen-year-old orphan Penny Sinclair moves to the small town of Dogwood to live with her godmother, she expects her life to become very dull. She doesn't expect to find a strange talking fox roaming the countryside near her new home, a kindred spirit in her new friend Zoe, or the secret grove where they discover the long hidden magic of The Phoenix Girls.

Learning to use magic isn't easy, though; Penny and Zoe get their magic wrong almost as often as they get it right. When something sinister threatens Dogwood, their often accidental magic may be the only thing that can stop it.

My Thoughts:
Ever since J.K. Rowling wrote the final Harry Potter book, I have been dying to find another fantasy book about witches and wizards that's just as good. That void has been unfulfilled until now. The Phoenix Girls has finally fulfilled it.

The Conjuring Glass was a great start to the series. I especially enjoyed the first two parts of the book. Brian Knight's writing style will have the reader hooked. I was reading late at night, flipping pages to try to figure out how Penny and Zoe were going to get themselves out of the crazy situations that they got into. I will admit, I slightly lot interest during part three. It was boring at times. However, after about twenty or thirty pages, I got back into the story line again.

I enjoyed all of the characters. Penny is an awesome female heroine. I think that she is a great role model for middle school children. She always stands up for what she believes, and never backs down. She also stands up for a friend that is being badly bullied, which I find very admirable. My favorite character is Rowan. Not only is he an adorable talking fox, but he is a wonderful teacher for the girls. He is wise beyond his years, and is always willing to protect Penny and Zoe.

The end of The Conjuring Glass left me with a lot of questions. The book ended on a little bit of a cliffhanger. I can't wait to find out more about Penny's past. I'm especially looking forward to finding out more about her dad. I'm also interested to see how the girls interact together, and how their powers develop more. I'm hoping that they will be able to defeat Tover and Birdman. I loved this book. It reminded me a lot of Harry Potter, if Harry Potter would have had three female main characters instead of two males and a female. I strongly urge fans of the Harry Potter series to read this book. I'm sad that it isn't more popular than what it is.

I give The Conjuring Glass: 4/5.
